2 Dead, 10 Injured in a Car Accident Near El Paso

A 19-year-old man was driving a Chevy Tahoe near Santa Teresa, New Mexico when he lost control of the vehicle and rolled over after striking a utility pole. According to Sunland Park Fire Chief Daniel Medrano, a 24-year-old man and 18-year-old woman were ejected from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene.

Ten people were transported to an El Paso hospital. The Mexican Consulate in El Paso identified nine of the 10 people as Mexican residents. A 13th person in the Tahoe was uninjured.

A United States Customs and Border Protection officer assisted at the scene, and the officer may have tried to stop the vehicle earlier but was unsuccessful. The car accident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. on July 27, 2022. Also responding to the scene of the accident was the New Mexico State Police. An officer with that department said at least two of those injured had critical injuries.

Driver Booked Into Jail on Suspicion of Reckless Driving

The offending driver, a Mexican citizen, was released from the hospital on July 29. Officials booked him into the Dona Ana County jail in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The police charged him with suspicion of reckless driving, two counts of homicide by vehicle, and 10 counts of great bodily injury by vehicle.

While this accident happened in a remote area, it could have occurred in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It could have been even worse if it had happened in a more populated area. Regardless, those individuals may experience a lifetime of medical problems and have significant hospital bills to pay.
