2 Killed in Fort Worth Car Accident
On January 22, 2023, Fort Worth police officers responded to a report of an illegal street takeover near the University Drive and White Settlement Road intersection. Witnesses say that the group was doing dangerous stunts and blocking other traffic from getting through at about 11 p.m. The police briefly turned on their emergency lights when a red Camero turned off their headlights and fled the scene. Witnesses indicate that the Camero seemed to be the lead vehicle in the street takeover.
Officials say that street takeovers are a significant issue in the Metroplex and that they are trying desperately to stop them. Generally, they involve someone driving into an intersection at a particular speed, turning the steering wheel, and causing the car to drift. Then, someone stands in the middle, videoing the drift on their cell phone while the vehicle keeps going in a circle.
Police officers did not pursue the vehicle, but they soon received information that the red Camero had hit an electrical transformer and burst into flames. Another police officer who was not involved in the original investigation reported to the car accident scene as he saw the car burst into flames while working on a different car. The vehicle then careened down an embankment before resting on the pavement below.
Two occupants were pronounced the driver and the driver-side rear passenger dead at the scene. First responders pulled the two remaining occupants out of the burning vehicle, and they were taken to a local hospital with non-threatening injuries.
